Thunder Bay International Film Festival

Every year, the Friends of Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary bring the world of cinema to Alpena! For five days in January, northeast Michigan is treated to some of the most impressive ocean and Great Lakes films from around the world. Film screenings are complemented by social events, educational activities, and opportunities to meet filmmakers. This year it is happening January 22nd thru January 26th at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center located at 500 W. Fletcher Street in Alpena. Hot Topics – Here We Go Again! New DOL Regulations for White Collar Exemptions

The Department of Labor (DOL) recently announced changes to the Fair Labor Standards Act that are once again causing employers to make changes regarding exemptions for employees.  The changes took effect January 1, 2020 and may require human resource professionals to make changes to their classifications of employees. Please join local labor and employment attorney, Laura Dinon, of Plunkett Cooney for this January 24, 2020 seminar as she will provide in-depth information on employment issues that can affect your business. Lantern-lit Snowshoe Hike

January 24th, enjoy a lantern-lit snowshoe hike along a portion of the Heritage Nature Trail at Mitchell State Park in Cadillac. The short hike, about 1 mile, will have a campfire warming station and hot cocoa. Participants are welcome to bring their own snowshoes or the park will have a limited number of snowshoes available first come, first served. Last hikers should go out no later than 8 p.m. allowing everyone enough time to enjoy the trail before lanterns are extinguished at 9 p.m. No reservations are required. Participants should dress appropriately for weather conditions. In the chance of server weather or poor travel conditions, the event may be canceled. Bigfoot 5K & 10K Showshoe Race

January 25th at Timber Ridge RV Resort in Traverse City is the Bigfoot 5K & 10K Showshow Race. The course is a super hilly off trail run with plenty of logs to jump over and branches to duck under. You can rent a pair of snowshoes if you don’t have your own. If there’s no snow, bring your trail shoes, the race goes on no matter what the conditions! Bigfoot is the Midwest qualifier for February’s United States National Championship Snowshoe race. For more information go to runsnow.com

January 25th is the Suttons Bay Yeti Fest! There will be events for the whole family abound at this annual event celebrating the mythical Yeti! Greenwood Foundation Winter Adventure

The Greenwood Foundation is a privately-owned property near Wolverine protected with a conservation easement held by Little Traverse Conservancy. January 25th from 10am to 12pm, Greenwood welcomes the public to enjoy and explore this rolling and remote property. A groomed trail for skiers will offer the chance to find respite in the beauty of a winter wildlife haven. A shorter route is available for snowshoeing. Please provide your own skis or snowshoes, although snowshoes are available for children 12 and under if needed. Because this is private property, no dogs are allowed. Please arrive at least 15 minutes early. This event is offered at no charge, but pre-registration is requested by calling 231.347.0991 or online at www.landtrust.org

Benefit Dinner for Todd KopKau

January 26th come celebrate the life of Todd Kopkau and grab a bite to eat. Donations are appreciated to help the family with Todd’s medical and funeral expenses. Todd lost his battle with Congestive HEart Failure on January 3rd. He was admitted into Butterworth hospital on Christmas Eve morning where he was diagnosed. It is asked that family and friends come to celebrate his life, tell stories and help raise funds for his family to give Todd the memorial he deserves.

AuSable Valley Animal Shelter Pet Food Pantry

Each Wednesday, while supplies last, dry dog and cat foot will be available at the AuSable Valley Animal Shelter barn, from 10am until noon. Registration is required. Recipients can register at the pantry or at the animal shelter. Brands will vary and quantities will be based on availability. Trivia Nights at Cherry Republic

Each Wednesday night, throughout the winter months, friends, neighbors and visitors gather at the Cherry Public House on Cherry Republic’s Glen Arbor campus to enjoy a rousing night of trivia, along with craft beer, wine, and a full dinner menu. There is no cost to play — simply just show up. Teams can have up to 6 people.

Friends of the Cadillac Library are having a used Book Sale. January 30th from 10am to 6pm. January 31st from 10am to 5pm and February 1st, 10am to 2pm. Great books $1 or less will be available to purchase. This event supports the Cadillac Library literacy & special projects.

Come join in for the 52nd Annual International I-500 Snowmobile Race and experience all the thrills of NASCAR on a one-mile oval ice track. Crawford County  Commissioln on Aging & Senior Center Community Dinner

Community Dinners are held once a month at the Senior Center in Crawford County. Everyone is invited to join in for this special themed dinner. Valentine’s Day. No reservations are required. The cost of dinner is a suggested $3.50 donations for those over 60 years of age and a $5.75 cost for those under 60. Dinner is served from 4-6pm. 308 Lawndale in Grayling.

Art in Ice, Sweet and Nice

February 29th, watch 3,000 pounds of ice be transformed before your eyes at “Art in Ice, Sweet and Nice” in downtown Bellaire! Carved by regional culinary artists and sponsored by Bellaire businesses, this ice art is something you won’t want to miss. The American Culinary Federation of Northwest Michigan has partnered with Shanty Creek Resorts and the Bellaire Chamber of Commerce to bring this extravaganza to the streets of downtown Bellaire!

Returning this year during the Art in Ice event is the Sweet Treats Bake Off, in which area pastry chefs compete for bragging rights as the best sweet treat in Bellaire, judged by the first 200 lucky ticket-holders! Sweet Treats tickets are $5 per person.
